Far from encouraging that greater sense of collective 'calm' that @Confluence is intended for; this post snarls in from a little more left field. Motivated by an innate love of bootstrap creative, and a simultaneous sense of disappointment at a lack thereof in DXB, particularly within the realms of Outdoor and Out Of Home media. For which opportunities in this city are boundless and beyond.
In fact, I would go far as to say that Out Door creativity in Dubai peaked at the same time as it epically announced it's maturity, on the morning we all woke up to a 700ft Statue of Liberty bearing down on the Sheik Zayed Road, courtesy of Emirates Airlines and the vision of a certain Mr. Humphrey(well done champ). But, back to the future and an industry that should have been propelled forward and inspired by this now, world famous example, sadly seems to have opted for mediocrity at best; just plain rubbish at worst.
On the Metro this morning, by way of example, we whispered by a huge bill board from Wild Wadi, suggesting I 'Embrace' their new water slides, sheepishly backing up the suggestion with a badly photoshopped image that made little to no sense at all. Really? Is that really it? With 44sqmtrs to play with and overhanging one of the world's busiest and fastest highways, is that really the best you can do so far as sucking us into the excitement and exhilaration of hooning down a water slide? And more to the point, how does one 'Embrace' a water slide, exactly?
Stand up Rak Bank. What exactly is it, that you 'have' or 'do' for your customers that 'protects them from sharks?'.
Aaaaaanyway, the list could go on. But this isn't meant to be a focussed critique. More a heart felt call for a little more lip slapping innovation and lateral curiosity when it comes to using this wonderful medium. So here's a few examples I've hoarded along the way, designed to trigger a little inspiration. Some better than others, yet all earning the right to be considered Brilliant. Simply by understanding who they are, why they matter, and how to squeeze the unexpected out of those everyday spaces and billboards that surround us.
Good things
