Or what? Come on, thrill us!

Believe it or not, there is one of these remarkable button installations next to the entrance of every single lift (approx 55) across the Dubai Mall. And since the Powers-That-Be failed either to ask nicely, or offer a suitable explanation as to why these little blue tormentors were there, and indeed what they would achieve if pressed, curiosity got the better of me and the inevitable happened....

...I was devastated when nothing of any real note transpired, other than a pathetically weak alarm signal that went off somewhere behind the chip board.
But I did get a small ear bashing from a poorly fitted Secuity Guard with a score to settle, that would have been pantomime funny had he not been deadly serious. Alas, I trudged off to spend through my disappointed.

On reflection I couldn’t help thinking what a superb opportunity these little buttons represent, for this retail behemoth to exercise some light hearted jiggery pokery at the expense of its clientele. In fact the same goes for all the things we’re invited NOT to do. As pedestrians, consumers, travelers and human beings in general; walking on grass, pressing buttons, opening doors and windows when things are moving, eating, drinking, talking too loudly, talking at all, heavy petting, running, jumping, climbing trees and leaving our baggage unattended!

Surely this would be a more light-hearted world if we knew our over zealous curiosity and innate mischievousness could be rewarded with some good ole fashioned, Laurel and Hardy style punishment. A pie in the face here, a squirt of sour milk there, or even a simulated arrest to comical music and hearty whack round the back of the head with a rubber fish.

All buttons and no press makes CB a dull boy!
